Illuminate Lunary with Natalie Eslick

With freedom, books, flowers, and the moon who could not be happy?
— Oscar Wilde

N.B.- There will be a video in the classroom once the class goes live where Natalie goes over the supplies with you :)

I have listed the supplies I used here, but I want to note that it is not these specific supplies that create magic - that, dear one, comes from you! The exact colours are not important, what is important is you enjoying creating, being absorbed in the process, and blooming where you grow right now. The supplies you have on hand will be absolutely perfect, I promise! You may also want to change up the colour palette - I am drawn (all puns intended) to a muted, natural palette, but natural palettes can also be vibrant, and where I have a soft sepia background, a warm burnt orange may speak to you more! Listen to your intuition, to your heart, and create with open abandonment and joy!

  • Fabriano Artistico 100% Cotton Hot Pressed Watercolour Paper in Traditional White, 200gsm/90lb, A3: 29.7x42cm (11.7” x 16.5”)

  • Tracing paper

  • Graphite pencils for sketching

  • Watercolour paint. The whole project can be done in watercolour, or as I have, with watercolour and coloured pencil. I use Daniel Smith watercolours. Choose colours that work for your palette. I primarily used:

  • Watercolour bushes - I use synthetic rounds in a couple of sizes by Trekell and Rosemary & Co

  • Etchrlab Palette Natalie uses (completely unnecessary but I know many of you are curious)

  • Coloured Pencils - for the fine detail. Use the brand you have on hand! They can be used as an extension to the watercolour, so similar colours and hues, or you can use them to distinguish from the watercolour. I primarily use Fabercastell Polychromos and Prismacolour Premier

    • Variety of greens

    • Dark Indigo (Poly)

    • Greys

    • Browns

  • Metal leaf (I used imitation gold, but you can get it in all sorts of metal!) and sizing. You can get packs that include the leaf and sizing - I will show you two different sorts of sizing, and primarily use the Kolner Miniatum Ink for the gilding

  • Nib pen or old paintbrush to apply the sizing

  • Black ink for use with a nib pen for the lettering, or alternatively you can paint the lettering or use a Copic pen or calligraphy texta

  • Metallic watercolour to match your gold leaf and create extra dimension to your lettering

  • While gel pen (such as this) or white gouache

  • Lots of enthusiasm, curiosity and a sense of adventure!
