Below are the supplies you will see me use throughout the lessons. Feel free to add and subtract supplies based on what you already have and love to use.

The supplies are sorted into two lists below. One list is the recommended supplies, if you’d like to stick to the basics and explore water-soluble graphites. The other list is the optional supplies for if you would like to explore additional texture and collage elements that you can add into your art journal sketches.

I also filmed two videos showing the supplies. I would recommend first watching those videos, as I show a variety of things and discuss which supplies may be interchangeable. Therefore, the videos may give you a feel for which supplies you’d like to purchase and try, which ones might not be to your liking, and which supplies you already own something similar to. (These videos will be available in week 1).

I am largely sticking to a grayscale palette in the class (with only small pops of color), but feel free to add however much color you would like.

If you have a question about any of these supplies below, feel free to ask me!

Basic Supplies

In this class, we focus on water-soluble graphites to do the majority of our sketching. Here is what I use:
Viarco ArtGraf 2B Water-Soluble Pencil
❖ Viarco ArtGraf 6B Water-Soluble Pencils
Viarco Art Graf Graphite Tin
Viarco ArtGraf Tailor Chalk, Black Carbon
Stabilo-All Water-Soluble Pencil, Black
Lyra Graphite Crayon

You’ll want to use a substrate that can handle wet media applications, such as watercolor paper or a heavyweight mixed media paper. I used an up-cycled vintage book from Sketchbook Co. that is filled with Fabriano Studio 140 lb. watercolor paper. Other great sketchbooks to use include:
Canson Mix Media Sketchbook
Handbook Co. Journal ( & for symbols)

You can also use any additional pens, pencils and erasers you’d like. Small brushes will work well for activating the water-soluble graphites. Here is what I used:
General Pencil Co. Kimberly 9XXB
Pentel Graph Gear 500 Pencil, 0.3mm
❖ Retractable Eraser Pen
❖ Kneaded, Gum, & Vinyl Erasers
❖ Pentel Arts Aquash Water Brushes, Medium & Fine Point
Uni-Ball Signo Gel Pen, White

We will also be making collage fodder, so use whatever supplies you typically like for that. Or see the additional supplies below that I used in the lessons.

Additional Supplies
These additional supplies are suggested if you want to incorporate textures and collage fodder into the sketches of your art journal. Some supplies listed are used more frequently in the lessons, other supplies may only be used once or twice. So again, I’d recommend watching the videos first to see what you may want to use.
Feel free to add supplies based on what you already have and love to use, or subtract supplies if you don’t feel moved to use something.
